Carol Burnett shared this on The Tonight Show. I thought it was cute.

Many years ago, Carol and her husband, Joe Hamilton, had reprimanded their late daughter, Carrie Hamilton, for telling a fib. She had been sent to her bedroom and was pouting on her bed. After some time, Carol went into Carrie’s bedroom to comfort her. As she sat down on her daughter’s bed, she began to explain:

“Carrie, sweetheart, your father and I love you very much, and we will always love you, no matter what. We just don’t like it when you tell fibs because we want you to grow up to be a fine young lady and fine young ladies don’t fib. Honey, your father and I want you to know that you can come to us with any problem, any concern, any time.”

“By now,” said Carol, sitting before the Tonight Show audience, “I was hearing violins in the background. Carrie was looking intently into my face, as I appealed to my toddler daughter. Then I leaned in closer. ‘Honey, do you understand?’ Carrie nodded her little head. Carol continued. “Sweetheart, I said, you can always tell your father and me the truth. Any question, any problem, we want you to know that you can always come to us.”

“By this time, I was right in her face, looking into my daughter’s sparkling blue eyes” said Carol. “A vision arose of me receiving Mother of the Year award for my compassionate understanding. Wondering whether I had gotten through to her, I asked, “Honey, do you understand what Mommy is saying?”

“Still pouting, she shyly nodded with understanding.
‘Good, sweetheart,’ I said, pulling her close, giving her a hug. Then she looked up at me with those big, blue eyes and said,

‘Mommy, can I ask you a question?’

‘Certainly, dear,’ I said ‘anything at all.’ She looked up at me, and asked,

‘Mommy, how many teeth do you have?'”

And so it is.

Amen for the honesty of children.
