Dear Editor of The Daily Bruin,
If you, Sir, won’t stand up for the rights of American citizens, I will. Though I am not standing up for the remarks made by Ms. Alexander Wallace, I do not condemn them. Perhaps her words were not the most loving way of making a point but then again, it is no more loving to make private cell phone calls in public or behind the wheel while driving a vehicle. This could easily turn into a case of discrimination — not against the foreign cell phone subscribers but against Ms. Wallace. Discipline needs to be doled out not to Ms. Alexander, but to those who disrespect her right to speak, have taken it upon themselves to make her address and phone number public and have threatened her life.
In today’s society, particularly in Los Angeles where one can’t use the phone without having to push buttons to speak English, it has become the norm for people to disregard the right of American tax paying citizens to peace and quiet. Sadly, far too many cell phone subscribers treat the city as their private phone booth, totally oblivious to their environment and their rude behavior. I know that I am not the only person who is tired of people disregarding visibly displayed signs banning cell phone usage — pictograms, no less. I know that I am not the only person who is fed up with being attacked as a racist as the only defense the dull can think of, when I ask a violator to please take his or her private conversation out of my hearing range. I cannot be the only person who knows that even an intelligent brain cannot talk, text and drive at the same time without dangerous results. Most people can’t even focus on driving alone. Using the public library as a private phone booth is no less inappropriate.
When a student intends on becoming a graduate of an institution the caliber of U.C.L.A., then such individual needs to act on that caliber. With a little consideration on the part of those rude violators who insist on making their private gossip public, postings such as the one made by Ms. Wallace would never make it onto the Internet. Frankly, I think that it is the dead on accuracy of her impersonation that has everyone so upset. In any language — it’s all gossip and gossip is the opposite of praise. In this day and age, it is acceptable to discriminate against “white” people because they are white. Wherever I lived around the world as a child, I was taught, “When in Rome, do as the Romans”. Sadly, “when in Los Angeles, do as the Los Angelinos” has come to mean being rude and inconsiderate to others by disrespecting their right to peace and quiet. Los Angeles is, after all, a town of obnoxious noisemakers.
I say we be honest and call a Lily a Lily. Ms. Alexandra Wallace is white as a Lily. She’s blond. She’s buxom, and she looks like she is from Newport Beach — which makes her a perfect target. I have had enough of spoiled blond types as well, but nonetheless, that doesn’t make it okay to discriminate against Alexandra Wallace or to make her address and phone number public, or to threaten their life. Had she made a derogatory comment about the French; “Eeh, moi je suis fi-fi fous-fous pour sonner parlez-y-Vous”, or the Germans, “Ach Du meiner lieber Augustine fahr Vergnügen Sieg Heil!”, no one (except for I) would have batted an eye because we all know that, “the French are all ‘inhôpitable bâtards’”, and the Germans, well we all know that, “the Germans are all insensitive ‘National Socialist Schweinehunde’” anyway, and since they “all” fall under the category of “white”, it’s not discrimination. This is an error of thought.
I have waited a decade for Ms. Alexandra Wallace to bring to light the evils of private gossip on cell phones in public places. It is the job of your Chancellor to educate your faculty and student body on the previously unaddressed issue of inappropriate cell phone use — in any language — in any public place. Wake up America! Our public schools rank dead last of all the “civilized” nations of the world! Someone has to stand up for those who have the guts to tell it like it is. The people who need disciplining are the hate mongers who have threatened Ms. Wallace’s life. God Bless Alexandra Wallace, God Bless U.C.L.A., and God Bless The U.S.A.!
